The challenge
Processing real-time geospatial data for global GPS tracking required an infrastructure capable of handling high-complexity IoT data streams without latency.
What we built
We architected a distributed system leveraging Cassandra clusters, Kafka, microservices, and custom protocol engines to manage massive data loads.
The result
A highly robust and fault-tolerant global tracking platform delivering real-time location data with unprecedented accuracy and speed.
Inside the platform
Trackers and dashcams connect to a custom protocol engine that decodes their binary messages bit by bit, verifies every checksum and can send commands back to the device. Decoded positions flow through Kafka to a consumer that batch-writes them into Cassandra, while a WebSocket service pushes live updates into channels scoped to each customer and user. Camera streams run through a separate media server, so heavy video traffic never slows down tracking.
Affordable at fleet scale
Looking up a street address for every position of every vehicle through a commercial maps API gets expensive quickly. The platform runs its own geocoding server instead, which keeps running costs flat as the fleet grows.
Operable by a small team
Checkmk with custom plugins watches the Cassandra cluster in depth, and Grafana dashboards let developers diagnose problems themselves without access to the core infrastructure.
